Game Analysis
Our junior varsity team opened their 2011-12 season in impressive fashion tonight as they jumped out to an early 29-0 advantage on Fort Benton and never looked back. Our junior varsity team members are Brittnee Theel, Brittany Whitley, Caitlin Vinson, Jimi Sangwin, Denerey Haaland, Haley Harmon, Emma Earl and Tianna Houlihan. Denerey Haaland had twelve first quarter points and Brittnee Theel chipped in nine points in the quarter. We ran our 2-2-1 zone press to begin the game and forced a lot of turnovers that resulted in many transition baskets. We dropped into our man to man defense and the girls were very aggressive in the half court. We didn't get complete stats taken for this game so there is not a lot to report for this game, but we will get stats for the remainder of the season. Haley, Tianna and Denerey all contributed twelve points apiece, and Caitlin Vinson scored seven. Emma Earl and Tianna were playing their first high school games and played very well scoring 16 points between the two of them.  Brittany Whitley, a transfer from Kalispell contributed four points in the victory. The junior varsity team has now won 19 consecutive games, as they went 18-0 last year. We do not have a game tomorrow night because Augusta does not have a JV team this weekend. We will look to fill that game against somebody during the season.

Game 2 vs Sunburst

JV Conf/Overall 1 2 3 4 Final

Tonight we hosted the Refiners and we got off to a great start again as the lead was 19 at the end of the first quarter. Haley Harmon put in ten points in the first quarter and Tianna and Denerey each contributed four. Jimi Sangwin player in her first game tonight and knocked down 17 points in the winning effort. We started out in our 2-2-1 zone press and forced 12 turnovers in the first quarter and 30 for the game. I really like the way these eight ladies are playing on the defensive end and they just seem to get better each game. We dished out 20 assists on the night and everyone had at least one assist. We shot 26 for 47 (55%) from the field and 75% from the free throw line tonight on 3 of 4. We will travel to Simms tomorrow night to take on the Lady Tigers. Hope to see you there.

Game 3 vs Simms

Once again the Lady Hawks jumped out to a big advantage after one quarter and never looked back as we led 22-2. Brittany Whitley and Denerey Haaland each contributed 9 points in the first quarter, and we forced 15 turnovers in the quarter. We had four different girls knock down at least one three-pointer on the night and for the game, we hit 7 from beyond the arc. We held a 30-14 advantage on the boards with 23 coming on the offensive end and this enabled us to score a lot of second chance points. We shot 8-11 from the free throw line for 73% and 23 for 60 for 38% from the field. Brittany Whitley, a transfer from Kalispell, knocked down 22 points tonight and Denerey put in 19. I am very impressed with the fact that this is our third different leading scorer in three games. We really took care of the ball and only committed 11 turnovers on the night and our defense forced 25 steals. Caitlin and Brittnee each forced 6 turnovers in addition to Denerey's 7. Emma and Tianna are really improving with each game and they are adjusting to the high school pace very well. We extended our winning streak to 21 games with this victory and we will next play at Valier on Monday night.

Playing our 3rd game in 4 nights really showed tonight, as we looked like we were lacking a little energy. I think the girls are ready for the Christmas Break and they definitely deserve some time off. We once again came out and pressed early forcing 14 turnovers in the opening period, but we did not get a lot of easy baskets off of these as Valier did a nice job on the defensive end. We continued to apply the pressure into the second quarter and forced another 11 turnovers that did result in some transition buckets. All eleven girls got into the scoring column tonight as both Emma Earl and Brittany Whitley knocked down three-pointers on the night. We held an advantage on the boards (37-27) and 20 of those were on the offensive end, which gave us some second chance points. We once again saw an improvement with the execution of our offense and I expect this to keep getting better as the girls spend more time playing together. We only committed 15 turnovers tonight. We are averaging 61 points per game while only allowing 9 per contest through four games. We are looking forward to the break and then we will resume practice again on December 27. We open up the New Year at Rudyard against North Star on the 3rd of January. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Game 5 @ North Star

Tonight we traveled to Rudyard to take on the North Star Knights and we once again had a very good first quarter as we jumped out to an early 21-2 lead. This was our first action after the Christmas Break and we were ready to get out and play against somebody other than our own team in practice. Denerey knocked down 9 points in the quarter and five other Hawks chipped in points in the first period. Our 2-2-1 press really caused North Star some issues as we forced 15 first quarter turnovers and North Star committed 34 turnovers in the game. We executed our offense very well in the first and second quarters, but we had a hard time finishing in the second quarter. We got great looks but the ball just didn’t find the bottom of the net. We discussed at halftime that we just needed to keep doing what we were doing and the shots would begin to fall. We continued to run our offense very well and the shots did begin to fall as we extended our lead to 38-9 after three quarters. In the fourth, Tianna really got going as she ran the floor very well and also got some great passes in the paint from her teammates to score all eight of her points. All eight Hawks contributed points on the night with five of the girls having 7 or more. We owned a 37-10 advantage on the boards with 19 coming on the offensive end. We committed 23 turnovers on the night and that is very uncharacteristic for this group so we will see if we can improve on our decision making before our next game on Friday night against the Pirates. With the win the JV team extended their winning streak to 23 games in a row, but more importantly saw them improve on their offensive execution. Great effort tonight!

Game 6 vs Power

We got off to a slow start tonight against Power, but then the girls got the pace of the game to their liking and jumped out to a 34-5 halftime lead. We forced 36 turnovers that led to a lot of easy transition baskets, while only committing 5 turnovers. Denerey Haaland, Britnee Theel, Caitlin Vinson and Brittany Whitley all had at least 5 steals in the effort tonight. Denerey and Brittnee knocked down 13 and 10 points to go with Haley's 14 to put three in double figures. We held the Pirates to 25% from the field and we shot 41%. The one area that we did not perform well tonight was at the free throw line where we shot 26% on 5 of 19. We were out-rebounded tonight by the Pirates (28-19) but that stat is very misleading as Power only took 20 attempts and committed the 36 turnovers.

Game 7 @ Cut Bank

We traveled to Cut Bank to face the Wolves tonight and had to battle for a half. We had a little trouble against Cut Bank's full court pressure in the first half, but led 22-19 at the break. Cut Bank really flew around and forced our guards into some uncharacteristic turnovers. We discussed how to break the press at the half and then we really took over. Breaking the press, controlling the boards and playing with a lot more energy propelled us to a 37-24 lead after 3 quarters. Brittnee Theel scored 19 second half points and Tianna Houlihan was absolutely dominating on the boards as we outscored Cut Bank by a 31-9 advantage in the last two quarters. This win pushed the JV winning streak to 25 games.

Game 8 @ Heart Butte

Fouls! The Warriors committed 27 fouls tonight resulting in 36 attempts from the free throw line. However we only converted 14 of them for 38%, but Heart Butte only went to the charity stripe 8 times. We put 7 players in the scoring column with all of them scoring at least 7 points. Tianna had an absolutely amazing game on the boards again as she grabbed 13.This was a very physical game and I was extremely proud of our girls for controlling their emotions. Haley Harmon had a very good shooting night as she hit 5 of 10 from the field. We will now return home to face the Sugarbeeters tomorrow night.

Game 9 vs Chinook (OT)

JV Conf./Overall 1 2 3 4 - OT Final

Great game! Two undefeated teams got to compete and people got to see some free basketball. This was a defensive battle for three quarters as we led 16-13 heading into the fourth quarter. Chinook then outscored us 23-20 in the fourth to send it to overtime. We trailed by one, when Tianna Houlihan was fouled with :07 to go in regulation. The freshman stepped up to the charity stripe and calmly knocked down both free throws to give us a one point advantage. Chinook quickly got the ball up the court and we fouled a shooter with no time on the clock. She hit the first to tie and missed the second to send the game in to overtime. Denerey Haaland and Jimi Sangwin had fouled out in the fourth quarter so we were short our point guard and one of our posts. Both teams got to the free throw line in this game and executed: Chinook 20-28 (71%) and CJI 23-31(74%). In the overtime period, Chinook went 8 for 8 at the line and outscored us by five to get the victory. We will learn a lot from this game and we will take that into the next meeting with Chinook. This ends the winning streak at 26 games dating back to last year, but we have learned a lot along the way. Great group of young ladies and they work very, very hard.

Game 10 vs Dutton-Brady

We hosted the Diamondbacks tonight in a game that was actually just a half game, so all stats were just doubled to get a complete game in. We came back strong after the loss to Chinook as we got out to a big start. Haley Harmon hit for 10 first quarter points that included 2 three pointers, Brittany Whittley added another three pointer to give us 21 first quarter points. These half games are difficult in the sense that you just get going and then it is over. We decided to just play two quarters, where as many games will play four - 4 minute quarters. Dutton-Brady had a very difficult time with our 2-2-1 zone press.

Game 11 @ Sunburst

We traveled to Sunburst tonight and came away victorious as all eight players got into the scoring column. Emma Earl made some great drives to her left and hit a couple of baskets, as well as had 4 assists. Tianna Houlihan also had a very good night scoring 7 points, grabbing 6 boards and blocking a shot. The girls shot 43% on the night while holding Sunburst to 19% from the field. We forced 38 turnovers and we committed 16 in the game. We forced some early turnovers out of our 2-2-1 press and these led to some transition baskets. We held a 30-20 advantage on the boards with 20 of them coming on the offensive end. I have been very pleased with the defensive efforts of this group of girls and we continue to try and improve in our half court offense.

Game 12 vs Simms

Bombs away! Simms played a combination of a 2-3 and a 1-2-2 zone tonight against us and the JV girls found their groove by hitting 9 three-pointers. Haley Harmon led the way by hitting 4 of 8 from beyond the arc, and Caitlin Vinson and Brittany Whittley each hit two three pointers apiece. We shot 39% from the three-point line tonight going 9 for 23. Haley finished with 20 points and Caitlin Vinson added 10 to pace our offense, but the night was not only about offense. The Lady Hawk defense was led by Caitlin Vinson's 11 steals, as we forced 30 Tiger turnovers. Simms was also held to 20% from the field and was held scoreless for the first two quarters. We had a streak of holding our opponents to four consecutive scoreless quarters as we also held Sunburst without a second half point the night before. Brittnee Theel also had a great night on the boards by grabbing 8. We will now play Cut Bank here this Thursday night at 5:00.

Game 13 vs Valier

This was another half game so all stats were doubled to put in a game. Valier had some injuries and illness that they were dealing with so we could only have a half game with them tonight. We applied our 2-2-1 Box Press and forced 22 first half turnovers that led to quite a few transition baskets. Denerey, Haley and Brittnee scored all of our points in the first, but it was Tianna and Haley that did most of the damage in the second quarter. Caitlin and Denerey really got the tempo going by forcing Valier into a number of turnovers. We will now travel to Dutton tomorrow night for another half game.

This was another half game so all stats have been doubled to get a full game. Dutton-Brady has a very young JV team that is made up of mostly eighth graders and they are getting better as the year goes on. Our girls really applied the pressure very early and forced the Diamondbacks to turn the ball over 13 times in the first half. Jimi and Tianna were both 100% from the field as Jimi was 6 for 6 and Tianna 2 for 2. Brittany Whitley had a very good shooting night as she knocked down two threes and a total of three field goals in the first half for eight first half points. Dutton-Brady was only 2 for 23 from the field in the first half for a field goal percentage of 9%. We shot 48% from the field in the first half on 13 for 27 shooting. We held a 26-14 advantage on the boards in the first half. We now return home to face the North Star Knights in a game on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 3:30. See you then!

We played the Knights tonight in a non-conference game and the girls did a real nice job of coming out of the gates fast. We had five girls get into the scoring column in the first quarter as we hit 4 three pointers to jump out to a 20-7 lead after one. Our defense really forced the Knights into a lot of mistakes as they committed 18 turnovers in the first half and 42 for the game. Denerey, Caitlin and Brittany Whitley combined to nab 18 steals. We shot 48% from the field in the game on 23 of 48 shooting. We really struggled from the free throw line tonight as we shot 4 of 20 for 20%. This is an area where we have been pretty good all year, but tonight was not our night. After the break, the girls came out and really looked focused as they outscored the Knights by a margin of 28-12 to put the final score at 56-27. We will travel to Power on Friday night to battle Coach Dunk and the Lady Pirates.

Game 16 @ Power

We traveled to Power tonight to face the Lady Pirated in a conference matchup. Power has a narrow court that is roughly 5-6 feet narrower which really is hard to get used to, especially for our spacing in our offense. Power kept his one close in the first quarter, but we really took over in the second quarter and stretched the lead to 20 at the half. Our defense really forced the Pirates into a lot of mistakes as they committed 25 turnovers in the first half and 37 for the game. We shot 40% from the field in the game on 23 of 58 shooting. We struggled from the free throw line again tonight as we shot 10 of 23 for 43%. At the break, I stressed the fact that we needed to quit fouling shooters. Our goal for fouls per half is 6 or less so I told them if we committed more than 6 in the second half, the entire team including the varsity was going to get in better shape on Monday. The girls really disciplined themselves and only committed 4 fouls in the second half. Emma Earl really had a good game tonight as she knocked in 8 points and had 4 steals. We are back at home on Friday night against Heart Butte and then travel to Chinook on Saturday night.

This was a half game so all stats were automatically just doubled from the half game. We finished our conference regular season JV schedule tonight against the Heart Butte Lady Warriors. This is the second consecutive year that our JV team went undefeated in conference. Brittnee Theel had a tremendous all around game tonight, and was outstanding from the free throw line and she nailed 6 of 8 attempts in the first half. Our defensive pressure really caused Heart Butte some problems as we forced 30 turnovers in the first half, led by Denerey with 5 steals. We were outrebounded tonight which is understandable with us forcing 30 turnovers. We shot 50% from the field tonight and 60% from the charity stripe. We now have a record of 16-1 and head to Chinook to try to avenge our only loss in the last two seasons. We dropped a contest to them earlier this season in overtime.

Game 18 @ Chinook

JV Conf./Overall 1 2 3 4 Final

At the end of the first quarter, we held a one point advantage over the Lady Sugarbeeters. We knew this was going to be a great game and it was. In the second quarter, Chinook found the inside game and grabbed a 3 point lead at intermission. We had some defensive mistakes that allowed them to take advantage of some opportunities. We made some adjustments at halftime and needed to come out with some fire. We played well defensively but did not score in the quarter. Chinook only managed 6 points so the deficit was only 9 points. In the fourth we battled back to pull within 4 but Chinook pulled away in the end for a 36-27 win. We finished the season at 16-2 with the only two losses to Chinook. This group of girls now has a two year record of 34-2. They put up some pretty impressive numbers over the course of the season. You can check out those stats on the girl’s basketball website. Great season! This group of basketball players will now look to lead the varsity team next season.
